Extreme Edition Home Makeover
Extreme Edition Home Makeover is a reality television home renovation show currently aired on ABC. It began as a unique edition of the show Extreme Makeover, which features normal folks as they completely reinvent their appearance through plastic surgery, weight loss, clothing, hair and makeup. Both series are produced by Endemol USA, which is responsible for a number of primetime reality shows that include Big Brother, Fear Factor and Deal or No Deal. Sears sponsors the program, with Craftsman and Kenmore products highlighted prominently throughout each episode. Ty Pennington, a former model who worked as a carpenter on another reality home remodeling series, Trading Spaces, hosts the show.
The initial extreme home makeover was aired in November of 2003. The popularity and initial success led to the creation of the spin - off programs that began airing in February 2004. Just as the original Extreme Makeover featured men and women having their appearances over-hauled, Extreme Edition Home Makeover features family homes ( that include exteriors and landscaping ) being totally re-modeled. Additionally, the two programs share in common an interest in helping those found to be “deserving” based on needs arising from unique circumstances, disability or illness. Families, just as the individuals in the very 1st, are chosen through submission videos, which can either be sent in by a friend or by the family themselves.
Most episodes consist of a single hour, however, in some more complicated cases, a two - part episode is required. The mission in each episode is to provide a family that faces difficult obstacles with new hope in the form of a home that suits their needs. Each program follows the same basic formula. The selected family is profiled and their submission video is screened. The design team begins with a visit to the family’s home. In what has become a signature of the show, Ty wakes up the family and surprises them with the news that they have been selected. The team tours the house and learns about the family’s interests and needs to use as design inspiration.
The family is dispatched on a one - week vacation while their house is renovated or demolished and reconstructed. A local building company or two along with community volunteers begin the basic work. As the house is being re - built, the design team makes plans for the more creative aspects of the new house. A part of each home is designated by Ty as his “secret room. ” No one is allowed to observe this room before the final reveal.
As the week progresses the different phases in the renovation are shown along with the sometimes - desperate efforts of the workers to keep on schedule. Problems that arise during the building and conflicts within the design team are also shown along with more mundane tasks such as a trip to Sears for supplies.
At the end of the week the family returns home to the cheering construction crew and design team. One or two buses block the view of the family’s new home for the most suspense. The new home is revealed and the family gets to see the end result. The “secret room, ” often directly relating to the family’s reason for being nominated, is typically the last part of each episode. In some episodes, the family is also given a gift from an outside entity.
In the 04 - 2005 television season the show produced a spin - off series of its own with Extreme Edition Home Makeover: How’d They Do That? This show featured extra footage depicting more detail relating to the home makeover in that week’s episode.
Guest appearances have included the Los Angeles Dodgers, LeAnn Rimes, the Harlem Globetrotters, Regis Philbin, Randy Travis, Mr. T, Elton John, Jeff Foxworthy, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Trisha Yearwood, Lance Bass, Patti LaBelle and many other notable celebrities.
In ‘06, a four - week long special shows focused on rebuilding efforts in the Gulf Coast areas that had been affected by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in 05. In these episodes the team’s efforts were focused on rebuilding important community structures. These included a free medical clinic, a soup kitchen, a Little League field, a church and a firehouse.
Extreme Edition Home Makeover has proved to be even more popular than the 1st Extreme Makeover and is one of ABC’s most popular programs. It has won two Emmy Awards back - to - back in the category of non - competitive reality show.
Extreme Makeover Home Edition - Swenson-Lee Family 1 of 10
Aired - Nov. 25, 2007
ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition celebrates its 100th episode in Minnetonka, Minnesota with a two-hour special featuring the return of some of the show’s most memorable families. Eight families from previous builds worked as special volunteers, along with TY PENNINGTON and the “Extreme Makeover Home Edition” team to build a home for the newly formed SWENSON-LEE family of 10. The family featured in the 100th episode is the Swenson-Lee family. In a nutshell, Erik and Vicki Swenson, coaches and parents of three (plus one on the way), took under their roof the four children of Vicki’s sister. It was tragedy that brought the family together. TERI LEE, a mother of four, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend, leaving her children orphans, as their father had been killed in a car accident in 2001. VICKI and ERIK SWENSON-LEE, both teachers and parents of three children of their own and another on the way, invited their nieces and nephews to live with them. Vicki was Teri’s sister. “They moved in with us just traumatized,” a tearful Vicki relates. “The horror and the grief that you see these kids go through; it’s so unfair. They left their school, their friends and literally within a 24-hour period had to start over with a brand-new life.”

The Stockdale family consists of high school sweethearts Ryan and Karia Stockdale and their four children. The Stockdale children all suffer from a rare disease known as Eosinophilic Enteropathy. This disease is a white blood cell disease. It attacks proteins, preventing the ingestion and digestion of food. The disease also affects and causes
diseases of the lungs, kidneys, blood, intestines and immune system.
The children’s names are Kayden, Jetty, Baylee, and McKinnon. Kayden was born with Gastroschisis, where the intestines are outside the body. Kayden had to undergo two surgeries to correct. Jetty and Baylee have to bed with feeding tubes because of their condition. McKinnon is the youngest Stockdale child, and she was born two months premature.
In addition to the children, the parents have also suffered some health problems. Ryan had been diagnosed with Migraine Glaucoma. The same disease recently lead to his brother’s blindness. Karia suffered some complications while pregnant with McKinnon, and she had to undergo five major surgeries.
Even with all the medical problems, the parents are very active in their community. They created a book drive and ran instrument drive for their school. Karia is a tutor and head of a humanitarian group.
The family’s home has several problems such as a coal-burning furnace and a weak plumbing system. Because the family has to get their water from an indoor well, they can only run one water-using appliance at a time.
